The Mustang gets a "phase 1 " arbitrary completion date, and I think I'm done.

Unlike projects of the past, I’m trying to somewhat plan this one out. There are of course needs and wants and long term goals. The Mustang won’t be more than a family/weekend cruiser that I’ll also most likely use as my summer DD for local/short errands.

I’ve set my roadworthiness date of August 1, but that might be testing my wife’s limit of project car budget . If I don’t reach my goal, it’s not the end of the world, but I’m going to try. What does that entail, you might ask? Well, a bunch of stuff, and I’m sure more than I think once I start disassembly . Mostly, refreshing the brakes (disc upgrade front, rebuild rear drums, staying manual), refreshing steering (OEM/Moog components), refresh suspension (stock style with a few comfort/alignment upgrades possible), wheels/tires. I will say restoration/restomod is a tricky business and it’s quite easy to fall down the rabbit hole of “I need the best!”. I need to keep the goal in mind of comfy cruiser and not a vintage road racer.

I know this will get met  with hearty laughter, but I do think my car switching days are officially behind me. Sure, there are times I think I should sell the 4Runner, and buy something older as a primary vehicle for me then use some of the 4Runner equity to “finance” the Mustang build . Financially, it makes no sense to sell the 4Runner either, and a near 0% interest rate makes it crazy to pay it off now, too. Having a vehicle that I know will be reliable for years is a good thing. Buying the Mustang officially put me on a 20 cars in 20 years run, and that sounds mighty silly, even if most were of the cheap/beater category.

So here’s the state of my garage for the foreseeable future ...in a few weeks, the 4Runner will get kicked outside as the disassembly begins on the Mustang.

I’ll chill now with the Mustang posts...next ones will come once the parts stockpile is in place and I start tearing it apart.

Feel free to blow up oppo with mustang posts, now that the abomination 1jz stopped posting there is a vacuum.

20 cars in 20 years is pretty good honestly, there are people, myself included who are at + 15 in 10

Please continue the posts. Oppo can always use more vintage US iron.

Overall, I’m at 27 , I was a little less active prior to 2020...after all, I did keep my Yukon for 4 whole years!

Oh, I’ll continue as I figure out things to do and get parts in...there are only so many pictures I can take of it sitting in the garage!

I’m on number 7, I think, in 30 years.

Oh, you pipe down. I figure my vehicle ownership is equivalent to dog years. A year and a half for me with the 4Runner  is like 11 years for someone else.

The fact that you achieved 20 cars in 20 years is something that no one will be able to take from you. But y ou should really swear off buying another vehicle for at least a year, so you’re not tempting to keep up the streak. =)

My real goal is to own other decades. So I’ve got the 60s-10s covered. I would loved to own a late 30s Ford 5 window coupe, as that’s what my dad dirt tracked in the ‘50s. I realistically don’t see owning anything older than my current Mustang, unless someone gives me something older.

One thing the Mustang has done is make me appreciate the 4Runner more. It’s a nice vehicle that I need to hang on to. And the Mustang fulfills a d ream to have another one in the garage. If we were to go back in time to teenage me, my “dream garage” then wouldn’t have been Ferraris (although that would come a few years later), it was a ‘60s Mustang, and some 4x4, I wasn’t picky on that, but most often the want was a Bronco. Oh wait...Ford’s releasing a new Bronco? So, about that 4Runner...

Yeah, that would be really cool. I want a 356 B Super 90 like my dad had when he was young and single. =) Awesome that your dad raced!

The new Bronco is the one thing that might make be part early with my Tacoma... TBD

Kinja'd!!!

It would’ve been really cool to see him in action.

Ford really should just go with the reveal, already. The 2 door looks appropriately square according to the prototype spotted a couple of days ago.

I have not, I should though. Quite the history with my dad, B17 flight engineer, came back, raced, put up power lines, and was a car guy through and through.

H ad I not bought the Mustang (or another project car) , I believe the 4Runner would’ve been gone this year. I had intended a mild off road build that I’d take camping and what not, but I really do have a city slicker family. That killed any motivation to do anything else to the 4Runner, and then I just wanted something that was a little more fun to drive.
